Choral music from Schubert to Rutter
This CD gives a flavour of the vast range of music composed for women’s choirs. From the elegant Schumann settings in five and six parts and the stately Brahms Ave Maria, it also contains some cherished pieces such as Schubert's setting of Psalm 23 and Elgar's The Snow with two violins weaving round the voices.
The two very different settings of Shakespeare texts – the witty If music be . . . by Judith Bingham, spiced with clarinets, and the sepulchral setting of Full Fathom Five by David Willcocks – contrast brilliantly.
We have a movement from one of Gustav Holst's famous Rig Veda with harp, side by side with his daughter’s evocative O Years and Age, Farewell. Another beautiful but rarely heard piece by Rebecca Clarke plus a commission by Andrew Parnell complete this eclectic mix!
